Human Rights Foundation of Turkey
Psychological Trauma Symposium
The Child in Trauma
October 26-27, 2019
Cezayir Rooms, Beyoğlu
The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT) struggles to put an end to torture and severe human rights violations, and carries out work that aims to contribute to the individual and social reparation processes from the impact of such experiences. Torture and severe human rights violations that consist of different forms of social violence (discrimination, sexual violence, child abuse, migration and forced migration, etc.) leave significant traces and effects on the individual psyche; different groups and generations are contaminatedwith these traces and effects, and therefore the whole social psyche is permeatedwith them either directly or vicariously.
In this regard, besides the individual treatments for social violence, we believe that creating common spaces to share the effects of individual and social trauma, and mentalizing gained experiences have a healing quality that is important.
In order to construct such a space, we are organising the HRFT Psychological Trauma Symposiumin Istanbul between 26-27 September, 2019. This year’s symposium main theme will be The Child in Trauma, and we will be dealing with the different forms of social violence and their psychological consequences, how to work with these consequences, and the ways to contribute to individual and social reparation processes –especially focusing on children and chilhood. In an area where social violence and traumatic experiences are ceaseless, children relate to the world and the society in their own ways; they develop, grow, and form their psychic capacities within these ways of relating. Dealing with the child in trauma brings forth important discussions on children, childhood, and thus the intergenerational and transgenerational transmission of social trauma and violence.
The symposium will host clinicians and scientists from Turkey and abroad, and include various workshops that will examine in-depth different psychotherapy orientations and social work approaches for specific situations. We welcome everyone with an interest in the subject, especially clinicians and juniour collegues who work in public institutions and NGO’s, and have contact with children effected from social trauma.
